Background of the Study
Kainji Lake National Park is one of Nigeria’s premier ecotourism destinations, covering diverse ecosystems, including forests, savannahs, and water bodies. The park is home to Kainji Lake, which provides opportunities for water-based ecotourism activities such as boat rides, fishing, birdwatching, and environmental education. These activities not only attract eco-conscious tourists but also contribute to conservation efforts and local livelihoods.
Ecotourism emphasizes sustainability and the protection of natural resources while offering unique experiences to tourists. In Kainji Lake National Park, water-based activities have the potential to boost tourism while fostering environmental stewardship. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited marketing, and infrastructural deficits hinder the full development of water-based ecotourism in the area (Okafor & Suleiman, 2024).
This study evaluates the current state of water-based ecotourism in Kainji Lake National Park, identifying gaps and proposing strategies to maximize its potential.
Statement of the Problem
Despite its rich biodiversity and ecological significance, Kainji Lake National Park has not fully realized its potential as a water-based ecotourism destination. Factors such as poor infrastructure, insufficient promotion, and a lack of community involvement hinder the park’s ability to attract and retain tourists.
Additionally, the absence of effective policies to integrate water-based ecotourism into broader conservation strategies exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the park’s water-based ecotourism activities and identifying measures for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
